Canna ‘Americana’ aka ‘America’
APPEARANCE : Big bold plants grow to head height, with lush broad purple leaves and tall straight flower stems in summer. Flowers are orchid-like, ruffled and bright red.
PLANTING: Happy in moist or even occasionally wet soil; will thrive in dry soil once established given enough water in the early growing stages; grows happily in clay.Plant bulbs with the narrow end facing upward, cover with a good layer of mulch to help regulate soil temperature. Cannas love frost free sunny spots
USE IN: Ideal for sunny borders, feature planting, large containers.
CARE: Once planted, water the soil to set the bulb in place. Water and feed weekly or if the soil becomes dry, give a good deep water. Once flowering is finished leave plants to die back, it’s not the prettiest sight but don’t be tempted to trim the yellowing foliage. The nutrients are being drawn back into the bulbs for next year.
CLIMATE: Frost-free to tropical
